How my journey began

Hello everyone! My name is Shelby Hisel. I am a former TV news producer turned comms specialist!

I am a 2014 Drake University graduate, with a dual degree in Broadcast News and Sociology. I am from a small town in northeast Iowa, Waukon.

While still at Drake University, I started as a part-time weekend AM news producer at KCCI-TV in Des Moines, IA. After 8 months I took on a full-time role, still producing AM news. Throughout my time at KCCI, I produced for morning, midday, evening weekend, and special projects. In 2016, as part of the morning show team, I was honored with an Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Award for best newscast.

After 5 1/2 years at KCCI, I moved on to take on the first Communications Coordinator position for the City of Norwalk, IA. I oversaw the creation of promotional materials to help garner attention for projects happening in the City. As well as for the library and other departments. After nearly 3 years there, an opportunity opened up at Des Moines Performing Arts (DMPA).

In August 2022, I accepted the position of Publicist for DMPA. I now get to immerse myself in the world of Broadway and performing arts! I love helping promote shows, bringing awareness to the wonderful mission-based programming we have, while also trying to reach new audiences.

I have a wonderful husband whom I married in 2017. We have a beautiful daughter, and we love our amazing home in Des Moines.

We are fans of travel, rock climbing, hiking, biking, and exploring new things with our daughter.

I am a big sports fan. I love all things NASCAR, football, basketball, and baseball! I also have a passion for writing, photography, and cooking.

Welcome to my crazy, amazing world!
